Tesla improves crucial safety feature to MCU1 vehicles in new update

Tesla is improving a crucial safety feature to Media Control Unit 1 (MCU1) vehicles in a new update, giving cars with an older manufacturing date access to what is a relatively standard crash avoidance feature on vehicles built within the last few years.

The MCU1 came standard on Model S and Model X vehicles from 2013 to 2018, but has been getting some routine upgrades as of late.

Tesla’s aim is to make some of its legacy vehicles more robust with a variety of new features, giving early adopters and those who purchased older cars for a good price a touch of the company’s modern technology.

Perhaps the most recent feature Tesla has added is one of the more well-rounded safety additions to any vehicle, as the automaker has upgraded and improved Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) to MCU1 vehicles.

According to Not a Tesla App, Tesla has added AEB for speeds of 100 MPH or more and AEB in reverse. Tesla originally added AEB to MCU1 vehicles in the 2023.12 software update late last year but has bolstered its performance with the addition of two more features that make it slightly better than what is considered standard.

Tesla said in the release notes:

“Automatic Emergency Braking now also works when your vehicle is in Reverse (R), not only in Drive (D). It applies the brakes if the vehicle detects an object in its path and a collision appears imminent. Automatic Emergency Braking is on by default each time you drive.”

While unconfirmed, the report also states that, due to the addition of FSD v12 in MCU1 vehicles, Tesla might have included AEB to react to perpendicular vehicles. This would help with collision avoidance for someone running a red light or being cut off.

Additionally, Forward Collision Warnings (FCW) are also available with FSD v12, producing haptic, audible, and visual warnings. This, along with the perpendicular warnings, were not explicitly mentioned by Tesla in the release notes for this update. However, Tesla likely added them to MCU1 vehicles based on the rollout of FSD v12 to these older vehicles.
