One Piece‘s Haki was a game-changer when it was formally introduced, giving Luffy a much-needed power-up and a counter to seemingly invincible opponents. It seems the power system is still going through adjustments and new features are being added, further increasing the scope of future battles and developments.

In chapter #1122 of One Piece, the Buster Call in Egghead reached its climax and the Straw Hat crew was struggling to escape. The Five Elders were not letting this happen, and just when it seemed like they were about to destroy the Giant Pirates’ ship, the “iron giant” Emet, the robot who was an ancient ally of Joyboy, pulled out one massive trick.

After a very short dialogue between him and Luffy, Emet untied a knot and unleashed an incredibly powerful Conqueror’s Haki, forcing the Five Elders out of their monster forms and transporting them back to Mariejois. It was revealed that Joyboy stored Haki inside Emet centuries ago, and this latest addition to Haki’s usage is very consequential.

Haki has undergone a few changes over the years, evolving from a power that can reinforce the body to predicting the future and more. Although storing Haki is now possible, the conditions to fulfill this are still unknown. Emet is a very technologically advanced robot that even Vegapunk was unable to recreate, but Joyboy’s Haki was actually stored in a simple rope, meaning that other users could replicate this feat.

Besides revealing that Haki can be stored, it also shows the immense power of Joyboy. His Haki was so potent it not only undid the summoning of the Five Elders that brought them to Egghead, but also shook Imu to his core. Interestingly, the fact that Imu felt the Haki from such a huge distance either means Joyboy’s Haki has a wide range or that the Five Elders and Imu are somehow connected, as many fans speculate.

Although this feature is new, it fits into the developed power system well. Black Blades work in almost the same way, with the blades gaining a black color after being imbued with Armament Haki countless times, and they become very tough. Furthermore, Haki is willpower, and a core theme of the series has been inherited will, so making it literal is an interesting twist. Sealed Haki could be very consequential in One Piece going forward, and it does give a blueprint as to how to defeat the Five Elders and Imu.
