Elon Musk rolls out Model Y ambient lighting system retrofit

Tesla China has launched an offer that would enable Model Y owners to retrofit their vehicles with a dedicated multicolored ambient lighting system for their dashboard. The upgrade costs a very reasonable RMB1,299 ($180).

The upgrade was observed and shared by electric vehicle community members on social media. As could be seen in posts about the update, the ambient lighting retrofit for the Model Y includes both hardware and software upgrades. Once equipped, the LED ambient lights, which are controlled through the Model Y’s infotainment system, could provide up to 256 color options for the cabin.

“The ambient lighting line is even and soft, creating an immersive in-car experience and adding unique charm. The ambient light supports touch screen control, provides up to 256 color options, and the color of the ambient light can be adjusted according to the mood or scene,” Tesla China wrote in the upgrade’s description.

It should be noted that the ambient lighting system retrofit for the Model Y would require the replacement of the vehicle’s classic wooden dashboard with a dash panel made of textile materials. This is the same dashboard material that Tesla China rolled out last year as part of its minor update for the Giga Shanghai-made Model Y. The update included a new dash material, a dedicated LED light strip for ambient lighting, and new wheels.

While the Model Y’s ambient lighting retrofit is very reasonably priced, the upgrade is only available for select vehicles that were produced between January 24, 2022 and October 1, 2023. With this in mind, those who wish to go for the ambient lighting retrofit are advised to contact Tesla China to ensure that their vehicles are compatible with the upgrade. Tesla Model Y owners are also advised to schedule an appointment for their retrofit at least five days in advance since the upgrade has to be done at a service center.
